Response To Nooma Videos

This video is a preview for “bullhorn”, a video in which Rob Bell attacks faithful preachers who mention things such as hell and sin.

Here is a response to that video that i really like…..

  • Touche’ !!

I wonder if Bell ever noticed that the book of Acts doesn’t mention the word “love” one time. Yes, God is love, but the spread of the early church was based on a clear presentation of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus and our need for a Savior.

  • Maybe Acts doesn’t mention love, but the word is mentioned 697 times in the Bible, 238 times in the New Testament alone, Most of those being in the gospels relating directly to Jesus. Love is a VERY important concept.

  • Seth,

love is a very important thing, you are right about that. the problem with people like Rob Bell is that they speak about God’s love as if its the only attribute God has. he neglects other parts of God’s characher such as his holiness and wrath.

  • Love is extremely important. We agree on that. But isn’t it interesting that when thirteen presentations of the Gospel in the book of Acts didn’t mention it once?

My point was that preachers (such as a former one of mine) are dangerous when they always preach that “God loves you unconditionally” but never mention the law and your need for a Savior. People need the grace and the truth of Jesus.

If you listen to some of these preachers, you’d think you don’t need Jesus. And that is a lie.

  • Great video! Keep up the good work.

  • Daniel,

Holiness and wrath are certainly attributes of God’s character –as are joy, patience and creativity. However, love is not simply an attribute equal to the rest; it is far above the rest, the only one of which is singled out and proclaimed as something God is. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that God is wrath or God is holiness. Yes, God is holy and God is wrathful, but to talk of those attributes as if they are on equal footing with love is simply wrong, at least in my opinion.

  • I would also like to say that the reply video to Rob Bell’s “Bullhorn” clip drips with sarcasm and disdain, presents Bell’s standpoint in a way that implies something other than what he is trying to say, and presents it’s own stance in a way that is both blatantly biased and very limited in scope. It focuses on one point in Jesus’ life when he demonstrates wrath and ignores the other parts altogether. It even shows Jesus being crucified without explaining why Jesus chose to go to the cross in the first place. Also, you say that Rob Bell “attacks faithful preachers”, when he does no such thing. There was no attacking at all in his clip…if anything, the second video was an attack on Rob Bell.

Finally, I will point out that the “Bullhorn” clip was very short, being only a preview. Perhaps is would be better to withhold criticism until you’ve watch the whole video, and allowed other to do the same.

  • Alex,

thank you very much for sharing your thoughts, i truly appreciate it. i must disagree with you for the following reasons….
    1) God is described as Love but he is also described as Holy. Just because the bible doesn’t describe God as “Holiness” (grammatically, it is much easier to describe God as Love than to describe him as Holiness) does not mean that his Holiness is inferior to his love. In fact, God’s Holiness is the only attribute that is ascribed to God three times….”Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord Almighty”…..once in Isaiah and once in Revelation.
    2) I believe that we should never pit God’s attributes against eachother. this is doing harm to God’s nature and glory. we should look at his manifold perfections found in his Love, Mercy, Justice, Wrath…ect….and uphold all of them.
those in short are my reasons for disagreement. if you want to understand God’s Holiness better i recommend “The Holiness of God” by R.C. Sproul. you can also watch this if you want… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn9c7QQ6VmM
Thank you once again for sharing your thoughts, i hope you understand my perspective.

    Grace and Peace

    Daniel

  • Thanks for the reply. I agree that we should never try to pit God’s attributes against one another. However, I think you accidentally missed the point I was trying to make.
The Bible says that God is love. This is a position only given to love; it is not given to any other of God’s attributes. Yes, the Bible describes God as holy, as in God is a holy Being and possesses the attribute of holiness…but it never says that God IS holiness. Or God IS wrath. Or any other attribute besides love. This is because no other attribute can measure up to all that God is.
God is perfect in His wrath, mercy, grace, justice, etc…but these are not what He calls Himself. God is love.
I think that I understand your perspective, and I hope you understand mine. Please understand that I appreciate your civil manner and kindness despite our disagreement.

    In Christ alone,

    Alex

  • Raw Bull…are you serious? i am in awe of the time this person took to make a B-movie mocking Nooma and Rob Bell. People are being sold into slavery as sex slaves. Others are dying of curable diseases.
Stop it! May you be ashamed to use your time and resources in such an irresponsible way ever again. You could have used that video to change something for the kingdom. Instead, you used it to criticize someone else.

I challenge you to make a video that will lead someone to surrender their life to Jesus. Do you think you could do that?

PS. I’m being serious. Your video was edited well and good quality. Do something with it other than “Mockumentaries”.

Peace, may God save us all from ourselves

  • Sorry, I have to disagree with your video a lot when in comparison with Rob Bell’s. The video clip you used makes Jesus seem like the Bull Horn guy and to a non-Christian, may be a deception of how Christ is. At least this is my perception. However, Rob Bell’s Bull horn guy is quite the opposite of Jesus.

Jesus never went around condemning people to hell when he went to the temple. Bull horn guy is. That is Rob Bell’s point about the individual. I just feel you have a bad interpretation of Rob Bell’s video and make your video a little too illogical by comparing apples with oranges (Jesus and Bull Horn guy).

Now, your perception about God seems to be pretty well. God is obviously about love, but his love takes in many ways. Love might be the wrath of God…it just depends on perception. God may see his people in danger so his love for them may result with saving or striking down the enemies.

Last thing…God is mysterious. So none of us can say we truly understand him. :) But he is a God of love, that’s for sure.

  • God’s love in the New Testament is linked to Jesus death on the cross.
“when we were yet sinners Christ died for us”
His love in dieing for us only makes sense when we realize that we are all guilty of breaking His law, and deserve the just punishment for our sin against Him.
The “Bullwhip Guy” statement as I see it is:
If as Christians we are loving, then we need to warn people of the judgment to come. And as Todd Friel’s response to Rob Bell’s “Bullhorn” shows we don’t simply tell people they are going to hell, but bring them to God’s mirror. the Law, so judgment makes sense.

Rob Bell is right IF he means we should not ONLY shout at people about judgment and Hell. But if he thinks we should not warn people of the judgment to come–ever THEN he has a different “gospel”. But it is not GOOD NEWS.

My daughter’s youth group has been touting NOOMA videos….It sounded good, when I heard it was about buying slaves to free them.
Then she mentioned Rob Bell’s name. His name sounded familiar. So I researched….if his teachings are not heretical they certainly are close.
Out of love for my daughter and her spiritual life I am taking this as opportunity to teach her about Rob Bell and the Emergents..

    Thanks for the video.

  • Your Welcome Bruce! im glad to see the concern for your daughter and her spiritual life, and im happy to help in any way.

  • Jesus gets to judge, humans do not. This is one of the most ill informed, dumbest videos I have ever seen.

I feel sorry for anyone who believes that in a world of pain and sin you can better help others by scaring them.

Who condemns you? Well then neither do I.

I will pray for all of you.

  • Excellent! For more info on Rob Bell visit:
slice of laodicea.com and lighthousetrailsresearch.com, and Apprising ministries, just to get you started. Rob Bell’s emerging church theology is littered with half truth and by definition is a doctrine of demons.

  • Where is it stated that Rob Bell is part of the emergent church or Emergent views….I have been doing some research and have yet to find where he actually says he is part of this movement. People may see similarity between him and this movement, but who has the right to lump him into a group or movement that he has not claimed to be a part of!

  • Alex,
The discussion about the Holiness of God and the Love of God I fear is still unfinished. Your statement that the Bible never says that God is holiness is true, but the Bible is saying, in the passages that Daniel mentioned (above) that God isn’t just partly Holy, He is Holy, so much so that when angels or sinful men see Him, they do not describe His love, they proclaim His Holiness and utter distinction from sin. And I know that you say that God is Love as found written in the book of 1st John, but I think you fail to see that John does not put the Love of God in priority in his order of things. He actually says that God is Light, and that this Light cannot co-exist or have fellowship with darkness. Its almost the same thing as saying that God is Holy.
In saying all this it is important to say that I am just as thankful for the Love of God as you, but remember that along side this love that saves us is a just basis for forgiveness. The love of God is never at the expense of His holiness or justice or else He would not be a good Judge and we would have no surety that all our sins are genuinely payed for in full.
thanks for reading, I hope it makes some sense
